Herman worked at the Burroughs Corporation in Detroit, Michigan from 1937 to 1964, interrupted only by his Military Service during WWII. He worked his way from a machinest involved in the manufacturing of parts, mills, and grinders to a design engineer responsible for the design of printed circuitry, supervision of projects, and special research. He was also a technical writer, maintaining and updating service manuals for various projects. His project involvement at Burroughs included the Atlas program Electronic Computer, Mauler weapon system Electronic Computer, B-5000 commercial computer and the D-825 Electronic Computer. His last clearance status was "top secret." Following his layoff from Burroughs in 1964, he tried several jobs before ending up at Chrysler Corporation in 1966 where he was an expediter responsible for providing liaison between suppliers and Chrysler facilities. He retired from Chrylser following ill health.

He served with honor in World War II, earning the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, two bronze service stars, a Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and one overseas service bar.

Although he never graduated from high school, Herman worked very hard to become an accomplished engineer, studying in night school subjects like math, trigonometry, geometry, radio and electronics, and engineering. He actively pursued his hobby of radio and TV repair in the basement of his Harper Woods, Michigan home and was involved as a leader in his children's schools. He twice served as the Chairman of the League of Parents in Harper Woods and also was the President of the P.T.A. of Beacon Elementary School.
