He retired from Chrylser following ill health.

He served with honor in World War II, earning the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, two bronze service stars, a Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and one overseas service bar.

Although he never graduated from high school, Herman worked very hard to become an accomplished engineer, studying in night school subjects like math, trigonometry, geometry, radio and electronics, and engineering. He actively pursued his hobby of radio and TV repair in the basement of his Harper Woods, Michigan home and was involved as a leader in his children's schools.
